What were they thinking?!?

I got a good laugh from this:

Rain Check Policy from KFC
We are so sorry, but due to the overwhelming response to our FREE Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal coupon, we can no longer redeem the free coupon at this time. But we will honor our commitment to giving you a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal. Please visit a participating KFC restaurant for a rain check form. Complete the form, attach your original coupon, and give it to the KFC restaurant manager or postmark per the form's instructions, by May 19, 2009, and we'll send you a rain check for your free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal at a later date, plus a free Pepsi with our compliments. Your participating KFC restaurant will provide you with the form you need. Please note that the redemption periods of the rain checks will vary. All other terms and conditions of the original free Kentucky Grilled Chicken coupon will apply. Thank you for your understanding,

Roger Eaton
KFC President

Questions About Redeeming Your Coupon?
If you downloaded coupons and they were not accepted at a KFC restaurant:
  • Please call 1-800-CALL-KFC.
  • A KFC Customer Service representative will assist you and also take the information about your experience and follow up with the restaurant.
If you have concerns about using multiple coupons with the same code number:

  • Subject to the terms and conditions of the coupon and instructions on, these coupons will be accepted by participating KFC restaurants in the U.S.
It looks like KFC is having second thoughts on their promotion. Really though, what were they thinking up combining the world of Oprah and the Blogosphere. Hello!
Anyways, whether you have the bricks coupon or the pdf, it's looking like you will need to go get a raincheck.
Is anyone else totally amused by this?

I redeemed two coupons today, no problem. When did this happen? I was there at 11:00am with my two girls and I wasn't the only one there redeeming them. I'm sure eveyone and their Dog has heard about it and got a coupon...or two..or ten. My computer let me print as many as I wanted. But I stuck to the "rules". No wonder KFC is "unthinking" their promotion.

This is so funny! Glad my hubby and I used ours yesterday... really though. What WERE they thinking?! I hope everyone does do the raincheck thing, so KFC can't just back out so easy. But I have a feeling most people will think its not worth the hassle to do the raincheck... which is exactly what KFC is hoping for!

we went yesturday to get ours and it took 30 minutes for them to fill our order. And that was at 4:00 in the afternoon.

we went yesterday and were told they'd already given 1500 free meals away. i have a hard time believing that. we were also informed that we didn't get to choose which sides we got. "Coleslaw and mashed potatoes w/gravy" he said. "But the coupon doesn't say that" and no amount of persuasion or level of feminine charm would budge him. i just wanted a macncheese for my kid who won't eat anything else. no dice.

and the manager gets to pick the grilled chicken (it says that on the coupon) so of course we got a drumstick and a wing. NICE. way to win customers and make people happy.

it did seem like a fairly shortsighted campaign. and i wondered if they'll change their corporate name to the more health conscious "KGC" ;-)

We redeemed our 4 coupons tonight without any problems. They told us the 2 sides were mashed potatoes and gravy and cole slaw but we could change that for a dollar more. Apparently not all of the stored are on the same page if they're still accepting them.

We got 4 tonight at Eagle and Chinden, but while we stood there for about 15 minutes waiting for our order they turned 6 people away because their coupon wasn't in color. They wouldn't accept black and white coupons. Just a heads-up.

No problems at the Meridian store tonight...even after 5 o'clock with a line full of people who all had coupons...we waited 10 minutes in line and about 5 minutes for our food. My kids were bummed about no mac 'n' cheese but we were content about having a free meal! We ordered 5 of them BTW...not a cent OOP!! yippee

We were also able to redeem ours the other night but with great hassle. They told us they couldn't take the pdf coupons because they were copies, however the customer behind us had the same pdf numbers on his certificate and they served him just fine. The difference was that we had our four printed I suppose. They weren't busy at all in Meridian the night they came out. It would have taken less time for them to serve us than it took for the poor kid working the register to call his manager (that was giving him no options)

I understand how hard it is on franchises when corporate comes out with something like this. It can hurt the small business guy. On the other hand-there are perks and drawbacks to being a franchise.

Promotionally, this was a disaster. I was willing to even purchase our soft drinks because we were getting a few free meals. With the poor customer service and the fact that we didn't get to choose the sides and got the choice of meat that was the worst (as some of you have also complained about) I will say that this promotion actually put a BAD taste in my mouth for KFC. (pun intended)

I agree that they are making it such a hassle to redeem the certificates that people won't follow through.

I went today. DENIED. I got a rain check though. Really, what were they thinking? Anytime you offer ANYTHING for free the word spreads. Too funny.

I'll follow through with the rain check. Just cuz they are silly for backing out and it made me a bit mad. I'm sure the chicken isn't all that good either.

Odd that the Chinden/Eagle store said no black and white coupons. That's exactly what we used on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 (and still had to wait 10 or 15 minutes).

Do stores really expect people to print coupons in color? What an expense that would be!

the raincheck thing made me lol. A raincheck to get a coupon for a coupon you already have?!? lame.

I went last night to the one at greenhurst/12th in nampa at about 8:30pm (late dinner) and I had no problem redeeming mine. However there was a sign saying that they were NOT accepting the PDF one.

I would have been SO angry if they didnt accept our coupons due to them being in black and white! Or the fact that they were the pdf file. OR if they didnt let us chose our own sides! That's all just ridiculous and I would have really been irritated about that.

I got the meals for lunch with my husband, who also ordered pig in a blanket nuggets (or something like that?) Anyway, the nuggets they gave us were FROZEN. And the chicken was just as oily and greasy as their fried chicken. I have to say I wont be going back to KFC any time soon.

My husband and myself had been shopping and went to get two meals and head for home. The guy was very nice at first until my husband told him we did not want any drinks. He said you cant even spend a dallor and get a drink Bob told him no thank you we were going home and had stuff to drink. When we got our food manager came to the window and said you mean you are too cheap to at least get a drink, husband upset by this time said yep thats what I said no drink. The meal was good.

I understand that it was a bit crazy, we got ours fine, but again potatoes and coleslaw were the sides... the chicken was a 1/2 a thigh and a leg... honestly though let's all be serious it was FREE FOOD... do you really expect to get exactly what you want. Especially in hard economic times we should consider how grateful many people would be for that meal, if you are going to complain about free than just give it to someone who won't!

This is getting interesting...too bad we don't have one near us.

Wow! That youtube video is awesome! I'm totally not mad at KFC. They were naive to think this wouldn't be the result, but I wasn't complaining about my potato/coleslaw sides even though I was disappointed. They are also naive if they think this promo-gone-wrong isn't going to hurt their image. I think it's fun that El Pollo Loco is going to accept KFC coupons on Mother's Day- cool marketing strategy. Joanna, I hope it's okay if I Post your link in a new thread. Thanks!

We are all the way out in Cleveland, OH and went last night. At first they weren't sure about our PDF coupon, but the manager said as long as there was a watermark they would accept them.
We got a breast and wing, plus the mashed potatoes/gravy and coleslaw. It was pretty good. They chicken was a bit dry, but again, how can you complain about a FREE meal?! I think if they weren't having the promotion, it would've tasted a little "fresher" and juicier. This doesn't change my feelings towards KFC (I craved the coleslaw and twister meal when I was first pregnant:) I'll still be going back!
